Painting Hearts and Ab-Exers on my lipshand-embellished screenprint In Painting hearts and Ab-Exers on my lips, Gina Beavers explores the ways we consume – and are consumed by – the internet. An array of paint-covered pouts are set against a fleshy backdrop as brushes adorn them in black and red details. Beavers’ distinctive style pulls from the infinite scroll of social media, with subjects frequently inspired by memes, selfies and makeup tutorials. Each edition is individually hand-finished with precise oil stick details, reminiscent of the heavy impasto that distinguishes Beaver’s original paintings.
Florescent LipPrint Florescent Lip derives from an ongoing series that takes inspiration from the video makeup tutorials that have been popularized by social media. The painting is a reflection of the self-creation aspects of our online space, and falls in line with Beavers’swider artistic practice, which aims to capture and to understand the anxiety and humor of the world that we inhabit.
Vase Lips, ceramic vase Influenced by online make-up artists who decorate lips with rhinestones and other elements, Beavers says Vase Lips “was born from the idea that I would try to make a vase. Sculpting with only my hands and a few tools in air-dry clay, it would have the definite feel of a handmade object. I decided it would be a set of lips with vases embedded, where the vases could be functional for small flowers or remain empty, becoming an alternative take on a traditional vase, as well as a comment on make-up, design, and digital culture.”

Painting Cube, Painted steel sculpture For this edition the artist further blurs the boundaries between painting and sculpture by presenting 5 individual paintings in a cube. For the concept of the cube Beavers is directly influenced by a digital photo collage app on her phone that had the option of assembling photos in a virtual cube. The paintings themselves are collages of women’s lips being painted with vigorous paintbrushes, images one might find when searching google for ‘paintbrush lips.’ The artist layers collage elements over the forms of a body, a face, other lips to create an added representation of the self. The self being Beavers herself in these works, associating make-up with the act of a paint brush and painting. Cast in aluminum, the edition constitutes the first permanent rendition of the cube concept as a sculpture that cannot be altered.

In-n-Out Burger hand-embellished Print One of her most talked-about works is the playfully bulging cheeseburgers and fries, In-N-Out Burger (2014), taken from an up-close shot of one of the fast food chain’s signature dishes. For her edition for Spike, Beavers turned her painting back into a 2-D image, each print adorned with a sculptural burger emoji made out of masses of paint acrylic sits on top of the flat picture. These unique editions – not one is alike – prove that Beavers can just as well flatten her own images, and make them swell all over again
The Life I Deserve Print The Life I Deserve (Ice Cream) provides commentary on the timely topic of wasteful, blasé consumption. Beavers often researches hashtags to find inspiration, seeking compelling narratives as well as compositions and colors. There is no denying the role consumption plays in our lives, whether consuming digital images online or food for our bodies.
